11th October 2011. The Inter-Ministerial Pricing Commission, under the authority of the Ministry of Health, has approved the inclusion of a new drug to treat genotype 1 hepatitis C (the most common in Spain and Europe) on the list of drugs receiving state funding. The new drug (Victrelis, with boceprevir as active ingredient) is the first drug with direct antiretroviral action against hepatitis C and has a better efficacy than the conventional treatments peginterferon alpha and ribavirin.
Data from clinical trials with boceprevir show that when this new drug is used together with conventional treatment, it can be successful in 66% of patients versus the 38% success rate of peginterferon alpha and ribavirin alone. Another important advantage is that this new drug also reduces the patients’ treatment time.
It is an important innovation that greatly improves the response to Hepatitis C infection, which will be available to patients who need it, thanks to public funding. In addition to increasing cure rate in these patients, use of this new drug can reduce the incidence of serious complications associated with hepatitis, such as cirrhosis, liver transplant and hepatocellular carcinoma by 40 to 60%.
As regards conditions of use, this is a prescription drug for hospital diagnosis.
